Stolen pickup used in fish market heist

KAHULUI — Maui police recovered a stolen truck believed to have been used Sunday by a gunman who robbed the Pacific Fish Market on Ho'ohana Street.

A vehicle matching the description of the one used by the robber was found in a Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. cane field between Pulehu and Hansen roads in Kahului about 5 p.m. Sunday.

The 2008 Chevy Colorado pickup truck was stolen from Jim Falk Motors in Kahului on Saturday night.

The unidentified robber, wearing gloves and a blue bandanna to cover his face, entered Pacific Fish Market at about 6:24 a.m. and demanded money from one of the workers, said Lt. John Jakubczak of the Maui Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division.

The gunman took approximately $600 from two cash registers and fired two shots into a glass jewelry case and used the butt of his handgun to smash another jewelry case, removing items from both, Jakubczak said.

The gunman drove off toward the Wakea Avenue intersection in a white pickup truck. He was described as 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, with a stocky build.

The man was wearing a thick camouflage army jacket, blue pants and a white baseball cap, and also had thick, long, black hair, although the hair could have been a wig, Jakubczak said.

Anyone with any information on the robbery should call the Criminal Investigation Division at 244-6425, or Crime Stoppers at 242-6966.
