KEALIA
Kapa'a teenager hit by truck on Kuhio Highway

A 15-year-old Kapa'a girl was airlifted to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu on Monday evening after being hit by a pickup truck in Kealia.

She remained in critical condition yesterday, Kaua'i County officials said.

The girl was crossing Kuhio Highway at the Mailihuna Road junction, heading for the multi-use path at around 6:24 p.m., when she was struck by a north-bound Toyota truck.

The girl suffered serious injuries and was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital by ambulance. She was later medevaced to Queen's.

Traffic on Kuhio Highway was stopped in both directions for about 1 1/2 hours following the accident.

Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in this accident, police said.
