Olympics: Beijing venues costs: $1.8 billion

Associated Press

Beijing Vice-Mayor Chen Gang said this week the cost of building venues for the Olympics is $1.8 billion.

He put the cost of the Bird's Nest National Stadium at $486 million.

The cost of venues for the Olympics is a small portion of the $40 billion that China is reportedly spending on roads, subways and buildings to prepare the city for the Olympics.

Organizers say the Olympic operating budget has risen to more than $2 billion but is still below the $2.4 billion for Athens 2004.
