HAWAII BRIEFS
Thief enters van with police inside

Advertiser Staff

Police didn't have to do much to catch a suspected thief Wednesday night.

That's because Gregory Chun, 45, of 'Ewa Beach allegedly entered a parked van in the Ala Moana area through an unlocked front door, not knowing plainclothes officers were inside conducting a surveillance operation.

Officers allegedly saw Chun take a duffel bag from the floor of the van and arrested him at 11:55 p.m. at Sheridan and Kamaile streets. Chun was allegedly searching through the bag on the sidewalk when confronted by police.

Chun, who has 37 convictions according to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records, was charged yesterday with first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and misdemeanor resisting arrest. Bail was set at $25,000.

Windward O'ahu Crime Reduction Unit officers arrested Tilton at 45-697 Kamehameha Highway without incident on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

With the arrest of Tilton, police say they have resolved all of O'ahu's six bank robberies so far in 2008.

Richard K. Talumi, 20, and William Avian Mara, 33, have been charged in federal complaints with two robberies each while Ellis Cleveland, also known as Cleveland Ellis, has been charged with four robberies, including one in 2008.

The alleged assaults occurred on Nov. 3, 2007, and Jan. 2, 2008.

Yoshinaka was charged Jan. 12 for the same offenses and released on $50,000 bail. Yesterday's indictment negated the need for a preliminary hearing.
