Irma Kmitaite-Smith scored 17 points and the New Mexico State Aggies pulled away in the second half to beat the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine, 71-53, last night in a Western Athletic Conference women's game at Las Cruces, N.M.

Anikia Jawara added 15 and Sherell Neal contributed 10 for New Mexico State, which improved to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in the WAC.

Saundra Cariaga scored 16 points and Tanya Smith added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Rainbow Wahine, who fell to 8-12 and 2-5.

Leading 27-24 at halftime, the Aggies pulled away by hitting 17 of 27 shots (63 percent) after intermission, while UH struggled with 9-of-27 (33.3 percent) shooting and was outscored 44-29.

The Aggies also scored 22 points off 21 UH turnovers and got 37 points from its bench players, while the UH bench contributed 15 points.

NO. 2 TENNESSEE 68, MISSISSIPPI 44

OXFORD, Miss. — Shannon Bobbitt scored 14 points and Candace Parker had 13 as the Lady Vols (19-1, 6-0 SEC) rolled to a 28-point halftime lead to win their ninth consecutive game overall and their 16th straight against the Lady Rebels (8-11, 2-4).

NO. 3 NORTH CAROLINA 76, WAKE FOREST 56

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — LaToya Pringle scored 23 points, Cetera DeGraffenreid 15, Rashanda McCants 14 and Jessica Breland 10 as the Tar Heels (19-2, 6-0 ACC), who led by as many as 23 points in the second half, handed the Demon Deacons (13-10, 0-8) their 25th consecutive league loss.

NO. 5 MARYLAND 90, MIAMI 50

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Senior Crystal Langhorne, a 6-foot-2 center, scored 19 points to become the first Maryland female to reach 2,000, finishing the game with 2,017, and the Terrapins (23-2, 7-1 ACC) routed the Hurricanes (8-13, 1-5) for their school-record 16th home win of the season without a loss.

NO. 7 STANFORD 77, SO. CALIFORNIA 51

STANFORD, Calif. — Senior Candice Wiggins scored 18 points to break Kate Starbird's career school scoring record — 2,222 to 2,215 — as the Cardinal (18-3, 8-2 Pac-10) never looked back after taking a 44-21 lead at intermission in rolling past the Trojans (13-8, 6-4), who had won three straight.

BATON ROUGE, LA. — Quianna Chaney and Sylvia Fowles each scored 14 points, and the Tigers (17-3, 6-0 SEC) used an 18-0 second-half surge to build a 58-28 lead in cruising past the Gamecocks (11-10, 0-6) to remain tied for first place with Tennessee with their eighth straight victory.

BERKELEY, Calif. — Ashley Walker had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Natasha Vital added 16 points and the Golden Bears (18-3, 9-1 Pac-10) took a 36-25 halftime lead and led by at least 10 points the rest of the way in completing a two-game season sweep of the Bruins (11-10, 6-4).

NORFOLK, Va. — T.J. Jordan scored 16 points, Jazzmin Walters added 14, and Lady Monarchs (17-3, 8-0 Colonial Athletic Association) opened up a 36-20 halftime lead and coasted past the Panthers (5-14, 2-6) for their 11th consecutive victory.

DURHAM, N.C. — Greg Paulus scored 22 points, including a burst of three 3-pointers early during a 22-9 run early in the second half when the host Blue Devils (18-1, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) turned a 46-37 halftime deficit into a 59-55 lead to frustrate the Wolfpack (13-7, 2-4).

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Tyler Hansbrough scored 18 points, Deon Thompson added 17 and the Tar Heels (20-1, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who had all five starters reach double figures for the first time this season, used a 21-0 run bridging halftime to rout the Eagles (12-7, 3-3).

LOS ANGELES — Josh Shipp sank five 3-pointers en route to 21 points, freshman Kevin Love had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and the Bruins (19-2, 7-1 Pac-10), after falling behind 2-0, used an 18-2 run and never led by less than 10 thereafter in handing the Sun Devils (14-6, 4-4) their fourth straight loss.

CALIFORNIA 69, NO. 9 WASHINGTON ST. 64

PULLMAN, Wash. — Ryan Anderson scored 27 points and the Golden Bears (12-7, 3-5 Pac-10) hung on to hand the Cougars (17-3, 5-3) their first home loss of the season when WSU guard Derrick Low, an 'Iolani alum from Hawai'i, saw a 3-point attempt rim out with three seconds left that would have tied it a 67. Jamal Boykin hit two free throws with two seconds left to seal it.

MADISON, Wis. — Trevon Hughes scored 16 points, Marcus Landry had 14 points and 11 rebounds and the Badgers (17-3, 7-1 Big Ten) were up 46-26 with 12:55 to play before holding off the Hoosiers (17-3, 6-1), who closed to 48-43 with 7:23 left, but got no closer.

NO. 14 STANFORD 65, WASHINGTON 51

SEATTLE — Brook Lopez, a 7-foot sophomore, scored a career-high 31 points and had 13 rebounds, and the Cardinal (17-3, 6-2 Pac-10) beat the Huskies (12-9, 3-5) for the first time in Seattle since 2001.

NEVADA 79, FRESNO STATE 67

RENO, Nev. — Marcelus Kemp scored 28 points to lead the Wolf Pack (13-7, 5-2) over the Bulldogs (10-12, 3-5) in a Western Athletic Conference game.

Brandon Fields added 17 points and JaVale McGee scored 15 with a team-high six rebounds and two blocked shots for the Wolf Pack, which has won 32 of its last 35 games at Lawlor Events Center.
