Preps: Lanai beats Molokai, forces rematch for title

The Maui News

LANA'I CITY — The Lana'i High School boys basketball team beat Moloka'i 58-56 with a fourth-quarter rally Friday night, creating a tie between the Pine Lads and Farmers for the Maui Interscholastic League Division II lead, and leaving the regular-season championship at stake in tonight's rematch.

The Pine Lads (8-1) trailed 43-39 entering the fourth quarter after being outscored 21-10 in the third.

"We just came out on fire in the fourth quarter,'' Lana'i coach Jimmy Fernandez said to The Maui News.

Moloka'i (8-1) could have clinched the regular-season title and a state tournament berth with a win.

Elmer Agtarap scored 22 points for the Pine Lads.

"Elmer was taking a lot of short little 8-to-10-foot shots from around the key, and he was 5-for-6 form the line, and I think that was huge,'' Fernandez said.

Phillip Bolo scored 13 points for Lana'i.

The Farmers' Kaden Tabil scored 16 points, and Keoni Kahoalii added 11.

"Kaden did a great job getting out on the break,'' said Moloka'i coach Lee DeRouin. "A lot of it was his own reward on defense, creating steals and then baskets.''

The Farmers trailed 29-22 at halftime.

Today's rematch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

"Tomorrow's game is a huge game for Moloka'i and a huge game for us,'' Fernandez said.

"We definitely had a sixth player in our crowd. They showed up in numbers tonight, and being that tomorrow night is our homecoming and we have our parade around the city, I think we should have a lot of people tomorrow.''
