Skiing: Austria's Morgenstern wins ski jump in Japan

SAPPORO, Japan — Thomas Morgenstern of Austria won a World Cup ski jump event Saturday, capturing his eighth victory of the season.

After a first jump of 125.5 meters on the Okurayama large hill, Morgenstern nailed the longest jump of the meet at 131.5 and finished with 261.6 points.

Janne Happonen of Finland was second with 249.9 points. Martin Koch of Austria was third with 249.3.

Morgenstern leads the overall World Cup standings with 1,355 points. Janne Ahonen of Finland, who did not take part in the event, is second with 845 points, followed by Gregor Schlierenzauer of Austria with 839.
