Big Island tree trimming project begins Monday

Advertiser Staff

A tree trimming project resulting in the closure of Ka'apahu Road in Kalopa on the Big Island has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 4.

Crews will cut back 16 trees along the hillside and remove debris to prevent this part of the embankment from collapsing. Ka'apahu Road will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Motorists are asked to use alternate routes. The road is scheduled to reopen at the very latest on Monday, Feb. 11. It may reopen sooner.

In December 2006, 21 of the 37 trees were cut down and large boulders removed to reopen the Kalopa Sand Gulch Roadway, which collapsed during the October 2006 earthquakes. This forced nearly 100 area residents to make lengthy detours to get to and from their homes for more than two months.

This is one of the ongoing earthquake repair projects. FEMA will cover 75 percent of the $24,500 project. The remaining 25 percent will be paid by the County of Hawai'i.

Additional work is planned on the makai side of Ka'apahu Road at a future date.
