Associated Press

MIKI, Japan — Akiko Morigami defeated Nika Ozegovic in three sets today and Japan and Croatia split the first two matches in their Fed Cup world group II tie.

Morigami recovered from a slow start to win the first singles match, defeating Ozegovic 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Croatia's Jelena Kostanic Tosic came back in the second singles match to defeat Japan's Aiko Nakamura 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

The reverse singles will be played on Sunday. The winner will advance to a playoff tie to be played April 26-27.

The nations are meeting in a Fed Cup tie for the first time in 10 years. In 1998, Iva Majoli led Croatia to a 4-1 win.
