Tennis: China takes 2-0 lead over France in Fed Cup

Associated Press

BEIJING — China took a commanding 2-0 lead over France today in their Fed Cup World Group quarterfinal tie, leaving the Chinese one match from making their first appearance in the Fed Cup semifinals.

Na Li defeated Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-1 in the first match and Peng Shuai needed three sets to defeat Virginie Razzano 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second.

In the first match, Li fell behind 2-0 but rallied to win the set. In the second set she took a 4-0 lead and was never challenged.

The second match was much tighter with Razzano taking the first set, but Peng rebounded to take the second. The third set was 4-4, but Razzano was broken to fall behind 5-4 with Peng holding her serve to close out the French woman.

"I was a little bit nervous when I was down in the first set," Peng said. "I could hear a lot of fans and my team and coach supporting me ... I am really happy. We're up 2-0 and we have a chance to make the next round."
