MILILANI — Cheynne Lishman scored a game-high 13 points and Taylor Jay added 10 to rally No. 1 Kalaheo to a 45-37 win over No. 7 Kahuku at Mililani last night.

The Mustangs finished the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East Division 12-0 and will receive a first-round bye in next week's OIA Tournament. Kahuku dropped to 9-3.

"It was a battle all game to try and get points," said Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado. "Kahuku's defense is solid. We missed a bunch of layups early, I think our guys were a little nervous."

Kahuku led 21-17 at the half.

"But we kept attacking," said Furtado.

Kalaheo trailed 26-23 after three quarters.

Jay's 3-pointer with 2:20 left tied it at 36. Following a Kahuku turnover, Lishman drained a trey to give the Mustangs a three-point lead.

Jay combined with Lishman to score the final 13 Kalaheo points.

"We opened up the court and let our better guards go one-on-one and try to create and that led to some fouls on their part," Furtado said. "Those two guys, when we spread the court, it's up to them. They have the green light to make the decision."

Kalaheo completed a season-sweep of Kahuku. The Mustangs won a Jan. 18 meeting at Kalaheo, 50-48.

The OIA Tournament starts Wednesday.
