Speedskating: American Shani Davis wins 1,500m event

BASELGA DI PINE, Italy — Shani Davis of the United States won the 1,500-meter race and Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the 3,000 to clinch the overall title today at a speedskating World Cup event.

Davis finished in 1 minute, 46.85 seconds, ahead of Simon Kuipers and Mark Tuitert of the Netherlands.

Sablikova, who has won five of this year's six races, finished in 4:11.09. Germans Claudia Pechstein and Katrin Mattscherodt, finished second and third.

Kuipers leads the World Cup standings with 394 points with one race left. Erben Wennemars of the Netherlands is second with 369 points and Tuitert is third with 338.

Sablikova won with 580 points. Pechstein follows with 400 points, ahead of Clara Hughes of Canada with 285.

In the men's pursuit, Norway edged the Netherlands and Russia finished third. With one race left, Norway and Canada are tied with 240 points. The Netherlands is third with 225 points.
