Turnaround expert named Hawaiian Telcom CEO

BY RICK DAYSOG

The turnaround expert who led Enron Corp. during its bankruptcy has been named the new chief executive officer of Hawaiian Telcom, the company announced today.

Stephen Cooper, chairman of New York management and consulting firm of Kroll Zolfo Cooper, replaces Michael Ruley, whose tenure as Hawaiian Telcom's first CEO came to an abrupt end this week.

The hiring of the 61-year-old Cooper comes as less than two weeks after Hawaiian Telcom eliminated more than 100 management jobs to stem losses from customers defecting to wireless and cable services.

Cooper previously served as chief executive officer of Enron after the Houston company's top executives Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were indicted for misstating earnings.
