Heavy rains cause UH-Hilo to cancel classes

Associated Press

HILO, Hawai'i — The University of Hawai'i's Hilo campus is canceling classes due to heavy rains and wind.

A faculty assessment workshop is going ahead, but all other activities have been canceled.

Officials are concerned about the danger of flash flooding from heavy rains that have been pelting the island for several days.

A flash-flood warning remains in effect for the windward side of the island.

The rain slackened somewhat on Saturday, but officials say the danger remains.

Officials say 100 to 150 homes suffered water damage from the rains that pounded Ka'u, Hilo and Puna over two days.

They say residents should be wary of runoff from the storm, which could be contaminated.
