Big Island tree-trimming project may begin today

A tree trimming project resulting in the closure of Ka'apahu Road in Kalopa on the Big Island is expected to begin today, weather permitting.Crews will cut back 16 trees along the hillside and remove debris to prevent this part of the embankment from collapsing. Ka'apahu Road will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Friday.
Motorists are asked to use alternate routes. The road is scheduled to reopen at the very latest on Feb. 11. It may reopen sooner.
This is one of the ongoing earthquake repair projects. FEMA will cover 75 percent of the $24,500 project. The remaining 25 percent will be paid by the County of Hawai'i.
Additional work is planned on the makai side of Ka'apahu Road at a future date.
