Red Cross has tips for those affected by flooding
Advertiser Staff
The American Red Cross has been responding to those affected by flooding throughout Hawai'i and offers these tips:
If your home has been flooded, excess moisture and standing water can contribute to the growth of mold, which may become a health risk. Open your doors and windows to air out your home and thoroughly clean items that have been contaminated with floodwater.
If you have an open wound or cut that has been in contact with floodwater, clean it with soap and water and apply antibacterial ointment.
Do not allow children to play in places or with toys that have been in contact with floodwater.
The Red Cross also urges families to prepare for a disaster by following these tips:
becoming informed about specific hazards and community disaster plans;
making a plan of escape routes, safe places to meet and a communication plan;
assembling a disaster-supplies kit;
and maintaining your plan at least every six months before a disaster occurs.
