Red Cross has tips for those affected by flooding

Advertiser Staff

The American Red Cross has been responding to those affected by flooding throughout Hawai'i and offers these tips:

  • If your home has been flooded, excess moisture and standing water can contribute to the growth of mold, which may become a health risk. Open your doors and windows to air out your home and thoroughly clean items that have been contaminated with floodwater.

  • If you have an open wound or cut that has been in contact with floodwater, clean it with soap and water and apply antibacterial ointment.

  • Do not allow children to play in places or with toys that have been in contact with floodwater.

    The Red Cross also urges families to prepare for a disaster by following these tips:

  • becoming informed about specific hazards and community disaster plans;

  • making a plan of escape routes, safe places to meet and a communication plan;

  • assembling a disaster-supplies kit;

  • and maintaining your plan at least every six months before a disaster occurs.
