1 of 3 rescued at Portlock is critical

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety workers yesterday rescued three young adult visitors who were swept off a ledge at Spitting Cave in Portlock.

The two men and a woman were taken to Straub Hospital & Clinic.

One of the men was reported in critical condition, and his companions were in stable condition, according to Honolulu Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

The three were thought to have been swept off a ledge while taking photos shortly before 1:25 p.m., HFD spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha said.

Kealoha said one of the men was able to climb out of the water.

The second man and the woman were swept offshore, but the woman was able to hang onto a cooler that was thrown to her.

The Fire Department helicopter picked up the visitor on the ledge while an HFD boat and Ocean Safety personnel reached the two people in the water, said Kealoha.
