Hawaii population to reach 1.69 million, but GDP to chart faster growth

Analysis by Greg Wiles

The Status Report from Sunday's paper is being reprinted here to show the forecast was of averages during five-year periods. Sunday's chart had inaccurate periods. The state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism has just issued "Population and Economic Projections for the State of Hawai'i to 2035."

The report predicts the total state population will reach 1.69 million in 2035 and that Hawai'i County's population will increase by more than two-thirds, to 279,200. Maui County will reach 207,600 residents, while Kaua'i will grow to 61,700 people. O'ahu will rise to 1.1 million. The report noted gross domestic product and personal income will rise faster than population growth because of technological advances and increased productivity.
