Matthews joins Kokua Fest lineup

By Kawehi Haug
Advertiser Staff Writer

Dave Matthews will be Jack Johnson's musical guest this year at the fifth annual Kokua Festival scheduled for April 19 and 20 at the Waikiki Shell, organizers announced yesterday.

The festival, which benefits Johnson's Kokua Hawai'i Foundation, will be Matthews' first appearance in the Islands. The Dave Matthews Band, whose hits include "Crash Into Me," "So Much To Say" and "Too Much," has recorded 31 studio and live albums since 1993, five of which have been certified platinum.

Matthews will appear with Tim Reynolds.

Local talent Paula Fuga, Honolulu ska band Go Jimmy Go and Hawai'i-born, Minneapolis-based Mason Jennings also are scheduled to perform.

Tickets go on sale Feb. 16 at all Ticketmaster locations, online at www.ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at 877-750-4400. Tickets are $40 for general admission, $50 for reserved seats and $125 for seats in the pit. Admission for children ages 3 to 12 is $20.

Proving that the Johnson crew walks the talk - ecologically speaking - concertgoers can add $2 to their ticket price to pay for offsetting the carbon cost of their travel to the show.

The mission: Get your hands on a pair of Kokua Festival tickets before they sell out.

Three ways to get tickets:

  • The old-fashioned way: Call Ticketmaster or go online at www.ticketmaster.com at 9 a.m. Feb. 16 and hope for the best.

  • Become a Kokua Foundation member and be eligible to purchase tickets Friday during the member pre-sale. Only members who join by 10 a.m. local time tomorrow will be eligible for the pre-sale. To become a member, make a donation to the foundation for at least $25 at www.kokuahawaiifoundation.org.

  • Local radio station Star 101.9 and the Kokua Hawai'i Foundation have partnered to allow listeners to order pre-sale tickets as a reward for doing a few hours of community service.
