Storms bring disaster declaration for Hawaii

Advertiser Staff

President Bush issued a disaster declaration today for Hawai'i because of the damage caused by the recent heavy storms, meaning federal funding will be made available to help recover from the flooding, mudslides and high surf.

Se, Daniel Inouye's office released the information today. Public assistance will be available to the state and the counties of Hawaii, Kauai and Maui, along with certain nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities.

"The federal funds will play a key role in our recovery and cleanup," Inouye said.

The state and all four counties are also eligible to apply for assistance under the federal Hazard Mitigation Program to prevent or reduce long-term risk caused by natural hazards.

Additional disaster assistance could occur after further evaluation.
