Playoffs in OIA to tip off tonight

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys and girls basketball playoffs get under way today, with four games each in the Red Conference.

For the first time, the playoffs will feature girls-boys doubleheaders at the school sites.

In 5 p.m. girls games today, it will be West Division No. 6 seed Pearl City (4-8) at East No. 3 Farrington (9-3), East No. 6 Kalaheo (2-10) at West No. 3 Mililani (6-6), West No. 5 Kapolei (5-7) at East No. 4 Moanalua (6-6), and East No. 5 Kahuku (4-8) at West No. 4 Nanakuli (6-6).

In 6:30 p.m. boys games today, it will be West Division No. 6 seed Radford (3-9) at East No. 3 Moanalua (8-4), East No. 6 Castle (3-9) at West No. 3 Mililani (9-3), West No. 5 Pearl City (4-8) vs. East No. 4 Kailua (4-8) at Farrington, and East No. 5 Kaimuki (4-8) vs. West No. 3 Leilehua (8-4) at Nanakuli.

The top two teams in each division earned first-round byes and will begin play with quarterfinal action on Friday.

On the girls side, West No. 2 'Aiea (8-4) will face the winner of Farrington-Pearl City at 5 p.m. at Kalani, followed by East No. 1 Kalani (10-2) vs. the winner of Kahuku-Nanakuli at about 6:30.

At Radford, it will be East No. 2 Roosevelt (9-3) vs. the winner of Kalaheo-Mililani at 5 p.m., followed by West champion Radford (12-0) vs. the winner of Kapolei-Moanalua at about 6:30.

On the boys side Friday, West No. 2 Kapolei (9-3) will face the winner of Radford-Moanalua at 6 p.m. at Mililani, followed by East No. 2 Kahuku (9-3) vs. the winner of Castle-Mililani at about 7:30.

Those games will be televised live statewide by OC16.

Also Friday, East No. 1 Kalaheo (12-0) will play host to the winner of Kaimuki-Leilehua, and West No. 1 Campbell (9-3) will play host to the winner of Kailua-Pearl City. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.

The semifinals for both boys and girls are set for Feb. 13, with a boys TV game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Mililani and the others at sites to be determined.

Both championship games are set for Feb. 15 at McKinley's Student Council Gym, with the girls final set for 6 p.m. followed by the boys title game at about 7:30.

The top five teams will earn berths in each state tournament.

The White Conference tournaments begin with quarterfinals Saturday. The semifinals are set for Tuesday, with sites and times to be determined, and the championship games are set for Feb. 14 at McKinley.

The girls title game will be at 6 p.m., followed by the boys final at 7:30. Both games will be televised live statewide on OC16.

The top three teams will receive state tournament berths.
