Fujikawa even, McLachlin 2-under at Pebble Beach

Advertiser Staff

Moanalua High School junior Tadd Fujikawa overcame a double bogey to shoot even-par 72 in today's opening round of the PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. The tournament is being played at three courses in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Fujikawa shot his 72 at Spyglass Hill. He opened on the back nine and played it in even par, erasing two bogeys with a pair of birdies. He shot up to 2-over when he doubled the par-3 third, but immediately rallied with consecutive birdies and parred the final four holes.

Kent Jones holds the first-round lead, shooting a 6-under 66 at Pebble Beach. Punahou graduate Parker McLachlin opened with a 2-under 70 at Poppy Hills and is tied for 26th. Fujikawa has a share of 61st and Castle graduate Dean Wilson is tied for 135th after opening with a 75.

Each of the pros plays each of the three courses once in this event. The cut is made after Saturday's third round, with only the top third — 60 and ties — playing Sunday at Pebble Beach. The 25 Pro-Am teams with the best score also play Sunday.

Fujikawa, 17, turned pro last July, after finishing 20th at the Sony Open in Hawai'i and winning the Hawai'i Pearl Open. This is his 10th start as a professional. He is attempting to make his first cut.
