Thirty schools enter Saturday's math contest

More than 200 students from 30 public and private schools on O'ahu will compete Saturday in the O'ahu chapter's 25th annual Mathcounts Competition at Kamehameha Schools' Kalama Dining Hall.

The mathematics achievements competition starts at 8 a.m. and will run until 1 p.m.

At 8:30 a.m., the program will begin with "mathletes" competing in a series of brisk "rounds" as a team or as individuals, with the top 12 challengers facing off at 12:15 p.m. in a countdown match. An awards ceremony at 1 p.m. will conclude the event, which is free and open to the public.

The state competition will be held on March 8, with the top four individuals and coach representing the state at the national finals to be held in Denver in May.

Schools participating Saturday are: 'Aiea Intermediate School, Aliamanu Middle School, Highlands Intermediate School, Hongwanji Mission School, 'Iolani School, Kahuku High & Intermediate School, Kaimuki Christian School, Kaimuki Middle School, Kalakaua Middle School, Kamehameha Middle School, Kawananakoa Middle School, La'ie Elementary School, Maryknoll School, Mililani Middle School, Moanalua Middle School, Montessori Community School, Niu Valley Middle School, Punahou School, Sacred Hearts Academy, St. Andrew's Priory, St. Anthony's School, St. Anthony's Parish School, St. John Vianney Parish School, St. Joseph School, Saint Louis School, St. Patrick School, Stevenson Middle School, University Lab School, Wai'anae Intermediate School and Washington Middle School.
