Kauai reaches DII quarterfinals

WAIPAHU — Keala Lovell, Josiah Motosue, Seth Quesal and Canon Bernard each scored a goal as Kaua'i held off Christian Liberty, 4-2, yesterday in the first round of the JN Automotive Group/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division II Boys Soccer State Championships.

The Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation runner-up Red Raiders improved to 5-2-2 in the regular and postseason and will face No. 1 seed Honoka'a (11-4) in today's quarterfinals at 3 p.m., at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

In other quarterfinals at 3 p.m., it will be No. 2 seed Mid-Pacific (5-6-1) vs. Hawai'i Prep (12-5), No. 3 seed Seabury Hall (5-6-1) vs. Kamehameha-Hawai'i (14-2), and No. 4 seed Kahuku (10-2-1) vs. Kapa'a (6-1-1).

Lovell scored in the first minute to give Kaua'i a quick lead, then Motosue's goal in the 19th minute helped put the Red Raiders up, 2-0, at halftime.

Quesal scored four minutes into the second half to make it 3-0, then Isaac Grotenhuis got the Canefire on the board in the 59th minute to close it to 3-1.

Bernard pushed the lead to 4-1 seven minutes later, but Richard Moyland closed it to 4-2 with a goal in the 74th minute.

Christian Liberty fell to 8-9.

HAWAI'I PREP 3, KAILUA 0

Konrad Kalei, Todd Powers and Alex Bell scored as Ka Makani shut out the Surfriders (7-6-1).

Kalei scored in the 31st minute, Powers made it 2-0 in the 51st minute, and Bell added a goal in the 70th minute.

KAMEHAMEHA-HAWAI'I 3, FARRINGTON 0

Kamaka Tauati, Cameron Castillo and Xavier Beatty scored as the Warriors shut out the Governors (4-9-1).

Tauati scored in the 23rd minute, and Castillo added a goal just before halftime for a 2-0 lead.

Beatty scored in the 75th minute.

KAPA'A 8, MCKINLEY 0

Chance Bukoski scored two goals in the first half and Ian Lactaotao scored four goals, including three in the second half, as the Warriors cruised past the Tigers (5-7-2).

Lactaotao scored in the fourth minute, followed by goals by Bukoski in the 18th and 31st minutes as Kapa'a led 3-0 at halftime.

Lactaotao opened the second half with a goal in the first minute, and Dylan James scored five minutes later. Velasco and Lactaotao added goals in the final four minutes.
