Bouncing back at the tournament's toughest venue, Moanalua High School junior Tadd Fujikawa overcame a double bogey to shoot even-par 72 in yesterday's opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. The PGA Tour event is being played at three courses in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Kent Jones leads by one stroke after shooting a 6-under 66 at Pebble Beach. Punahou graduate Parker McLachlin opened with a 70 at Poppy Hills and is tied for 26th. Fujikawa has a share of 61st and Castle graduate Dean Wilson is tied for 135th after opening with a 75.

Fujikawa shot his 72 at Spyglass Hill, a course he had never seen before. He opened on the back nine and played it in even par, erasing two bogeys with a pair of birdies. He two-putted the par-5 11th hole from 20 feet, taking the sting away from bogeying his first hole, and dropped his approach shot to 8 feet on the 16th.

"I kinda struggled my way through the back nine, but got some confidence going into the front with the way I started hitting and putting and everything," Fujikawa, 17, said. "I hit a few good shots (on the back) that ended up not as close as I expected and missed a few birdies. It was not too bad, but could have been a lot better."

It grew worse when he three-putted the third hole to take double bogey. Fujikawa immediately rallied with consecutive birdies, from 12 feet and 5.

He parred the final four holes, one-putting No. 6 after hitting into the bunker and sinking a 6-footer on the next hole after his approach shot hit near the hole and rolled down the slope and off the green. Fujikawa salvaged par with a "really high flop shot."

His ability to bounce back was especially satisfying on what he called "supposedly the toughest" of the AT&T's three courses. Fujikawa plays Pebble Beach today (7:30 a.m. HST) and Poppy Hills tomorrow (6:40 a.m.).

"Overall it was a good day," said Fujikawa, who had a gallery of about 30 playing with pro Greg Owen and amateurs Murray Bodine and Harris Barton. "I didn't shoot a really, really low number but I didn't shoot myself out of the tournament so it was pretty satisfying.

"There are two more courses I can come back on. I stayed in the present very well today. This was a very good day."

The cut is made after tomorrow's third round, with only the top third — 60 and ties — playing Sunday at Pebble Beach. The 25 Pro-Am teams with the best score also play Sunday.

Fujikawa turned pro last July, after finishing 20th at the Sony Open in Hawai'i and winning the Hawai'i Pearl Open. This is his 10th start as a professional. He is attempting to make his first cut.

Fujikawa recently became an affiliate member of the European Tour. He purchased the status for about $4,000. It allows him to play up to seven events on sponsor exemptions and be listed on the European Tour's Order of Merit (money list). There is a provision that allows him to play more if he earns over a specific amount. It is Fujikawa's first tour membership.
