Kauai bridge deemed safe after container hits it

HANAPEPE, Kaua'i – The county-owned Hanapepe Bridge was reopened Friday morning following an inspection conducted by Public Works officials.

"We did a visual inspection of the bridge and there is no evidence of structural damage," said Deputy County Engineer Ed Renaud, adding that the integrity of the bridge is sound.

The bridge was hit by a Matson container on Sunday when it floated down the Hanapepe River following flooding in the area.

The bridge's condition could not be fully assessed until Friday when the river level returned to normal, county officials said.

In December, the bridge, which has a 10-ton weight limit, was examined by a private engineering firm and deemed to be sound.
