Repairs, upgrades planned at Maui County parks

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU, Maui — Construction began recently on a new playground at Napili Park, and graffiti removal and repairs to rubberized surfacing will begin soon on a weather-permitting basis at three parks around the island.

At Kalama Park, the existing structure that was damaged by vandalism and fire last week is scheduled to be removed in mid-March and replaced in April.

Work on the Napili Park Playground, Phase I, began Monday with an expected completion date of June 25. The cost for the project is $261,472. Design consultant is Ronald M. Fukumoto Engineering, Inc.; general contractor is David P. Ting and Sons. The park will remain open during the construction of the playground, with tennis and basketball courts available for use. However, park users are asked to please use caution and stay clear of the playground construction area. The parking lot at Napili Park Phase II will be closed during construction; additional parking will be available across the street in the Napili Park Phase I parking lot.

At Keopuolani Park, construction is continuing on the "Boundless" playground, which is tentatively scheduled for completion in June.

The playground at Pukalani Park was closed recently for public use after vandalism and graffiti damaged the play structure; the rubberized surface is expected to be repaired Feb. 13 and 14, with graffiti removal by parks staff scheduled the week of Feb. 25. The park is schedule to reopen March 3.

Repairs will also be made at the Wailuku Heights Park, with work scheduled to start Feb. 18 and be completed on Feb. 22.

Work on the rubberized surface is expected to begin Feb. 25 at the Wailuku Elementary School Park; repairs there should be completed by Feb. 29.
