Sydney FC to play in Hawaii soccer exhibition tourney

Associated Press

Australia's Sydney FC was added as the fourth team in this month's inaugural Pan-Pacific Championship.

Sydney, led by Alex Brosque and Brazil's Juninho, will represent the Hyundai A-League in the four-team exhibition tournament at Aloha Stadium, Soccer United Marketing said.

The event also will include Japanese champion Gamba Osaka, the Major League Soccer Cup champion Houston Dynamo and the Los Angeles Galaxy featuring David Beckham.

Sydney finished third in the final 2007-08 standings to earn a spot in one of the semifinals of the A-League's Final Series. Following a 0-0 draw in the home leg, Sydney lost 2-0 to Queensland Roar in the away match of the Minor Semifinal.

The Pan-Pacific tournament will feature a pair of doubleheaders Feb. 20 and Feb. 23, with the first day's winners playing for the title and the losers for third place. Gamba Osaka will open the tournament against the Galaxy, with Houston facing Sydney.

The event is MLS' latest attempt to schedule matches against foreign opposition, joining the SuperLiga against Mexican opponents.
