8th-grader wins Kauai spelling bee

Annalisa Hartsell, an eighth-grader at Waimea Canyon Middle School, was the winner of the Kaua'i District Spelling Bee last night at Chiefess Kamakehelei Middle School.

Hartsell, 13, won by spelling correctly spelling "parallelogram."

Second place went to Keala Lopez, 12, a seventh-grade student at Kapa'a Middle School.

Both will advance to The Advertiser's 23nd annual Hawai'i State Spelling Bee on March 16. The state bee will be televised on OC16.

The state winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip in May to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Here is the schedule of district spelling bees and qualifiers for the state bee March 16:

Yesterday: Kaua'i District, winner Annalisa Hartsell (Waimea Canyon Middle School) and runner-up Keala Lopez (Kapa'a Middle School).

Today: Honolulu District, Sacred Hearts Academy, 2 p.m.

Tuesday: Windward O'ahu District, Le Jardin Academy, 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday: O'ahu Central District, Moanalua Middle School, 6 p.m.

Thursday: Maui District, 'Iao Intermediate School, 5:30 p.m.

Feb. 22: O'ahu Leeward District, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 6 p.m.

Feb. 23: Hawai'i District, Kealakehe Intermediate School, 1 p.m.
