Pebble Beach Golf Links, one of the prettiest places on earth, turned ugly on Tadd Fujikawa yesterday. The Moanalua High School junior shot a second-round 81 at Pebble and tumbled 100 places in the PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
After an opening-round 72 at Spyglass Hill, considered the toughest of the three courses this tournament uses in Pebble Beach, Calif., Fujikawa fell far back yesterday. His 153 total is 16 shots off Tim Herron's lead. The 81 was the worst score of his professional career, which is in its 10th tournament.
The top 60 and ties after today's third round advance to the final round, along with the top 25 Pro-Am teams. Punahou graduate Parker McLachlin moved into a tie for 12th with his second straight 70, playing Spyglass yesterday. Dean Wilson shot a 73 at Spyglass and is at 148.
Fujikawa made the turn in 4-over-par 40 yesterday, with two bogeys and a double bogey — he missed a three-footer — on the front nine. He added another double bogey at the 11th, bogeyed the next hole then made his only birdie at the 13th, sinking a six-foot putt. He had three more bogeys coming in.
"It's a pretty tough course," Fujikawa said. "After yesterday's round I had a lot of confidence going into today. This course really fits my eye, I love Pebble Beach, love the atmosphere. There's no better place for golf. Unfortunately it didn't go too well today, but that's golf. You just do the best you can."
Fujikawa tees off at 6:40 a.m. HST today at Poppy Hills.
