Tennis: Chakvetadze wins Open Gaz de France

Associated Press

PARIS — Anna Chakvetadze beat Agnes Szavay of Hungary 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 today to win the Open Gaz de France.

After losing the second set, Chakvetadze left the court for a few minutes to have medical treatment on her left elbow.

Szavay later double-faulted to give the top-seeded Russian two match points. Chakvetadze won when the Hungarian hit a backhand long.

Chakvetadze took the first set with a backhand winner down the line as Szavay struggled with her serve and converted only one of five break points.

In the second set, Szavay landed 70 percent of her first serves, while Chakvetadze made a string of unforced errors.
