Preps: Waiakea, KS-Hawaii win BIIF girls hoops titles

The Waiakea High School and Kamehameha Schools Hawai'i girls basketball teams won the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I and Division II titles last night at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

Waiakea (13-0), ranked fourth in the Advertiser's statewide poll of media and coaches, defeated defending state champion Konawaena, 65-48. Kirsty Imai had 20 points and Kamie Imai had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Thea Hanato-Smith had nine points for sixth-ranked Konawaena (11-3).

In the Division II final, defending state champion Kamehameha-Hawai'i defeated Hawai'i Prep, 50-26. Kanisha Bello led the Warriors (10-3) with 16 points.

Tayler Wang scored 13 for Ka Makani (6-8).

All four teams have qualified for the state D-I and D-II tournaments.
