Valentine's Day gifts for every budget

By Jenny Elig
The Indianapolis Star

All you need is love. But a gift can certainly improve day-to-day relations, especially between you and your sweetie. The mere mention of Valentine's Day conjures up images of doily-lined chocolate boxes, lacy little nothings and shiny diamonds — certainly a nice start. Because no one should show up empty-handed on Valentine's Day, we sifted through gift ideas and came up with these favorites.

UNDER $50

• This lovely little volume may be the ultimate anthology of love poetry. Crack open the red binding and flip past the gold-embossed cloth cover to find works by everyone from Shakespeare to Pushkin to Pablo Neruda. "Love Poems," edited by Peter Washington (Everyman's Library, 1993, $12.50) is in bookstores and at www.amazon.com.

• If the original left you curious, "The Pop-Up Kama Sutra," by Sir Richard Burton and F.F. Arbuthnot, features six paper-engineered variations, 40 vintage color plates and choice excerpts from the original text (Stewart, Tabori and Chang, 2003, $22.50), in bookstores and at www.amazon.com.

• At Tiffany & Co., for your favorite frequent flier: a patent leather luggage tag ($50) and matching "Love Notes" journal ($45). (The sterling silver Paloma Picasso "Crown of Hearts" pendant with red enamel is more of a splurge at $185.)

• Perfect for snuggly Saturday mornings: Club Jenni patterned pajama pants ($32), Jockey red striped boxers ($15), Morgan Taylor slip nightie ($19.98) and Jenni sleep shorts ($22), all at Macy's.

UNDER $100

• He'll have no excuse to be late for your date with a reasonably priced Fossil men's watch ($65) from Macy's.

UNDER $250

• This year, says Tiffany & Co.'s Erica Chappell, "it's all about adding newness to the classic charm bracelet. ... The charms are really fresh and new, some perfect for Valentine's Day. Red enamel is new to charms, and you'll also see it in other pieces." The basic bracelet ($130) is adorned with charms including the "I Love You" heart ($125), "XOXO" heart ($125), and enameled red heart ($150), all at Tiffany & Co.

• Incorporate Betsey Johnson's fun and flirty style with her line of accessories. Heart-and-bow earrings ($30), large heart necklace ($125), bracelet ($110) and red heart necklace ($50), all from Macy's.

• Extra points if you load the new pink iPod Nano ($199), or the red iPod shuffle ($79), both from the Apple Store, with favorite love songs first.

• Spice up her wardrobe with a Hilary Radley vinyl jacket ($240) from Macy's.

• Heat up the gray February days with a Dooney & Bourke domed satchel ($195) from Macy's.

SKY'S THE LIMIT

• Keep your love on-track with the Tom Tom Go 720 GPS Unit ($449.99) from Best Buy.

• Valentine's gifts don't get much more luxe than a Tiffany & Co. pink sapphire and diamond Legacy engagement ring ($11,400), ready to be tucked inside a one-of-a-kind Limoges porcelain box ($250) hand painted in the company's Paris studios.
