WAILUKU — Clean food cans are now being accepted at county recycling centers, the county Solid Waste Division has announced.

"We realized that food-can recycling was something the community was asking for," said Cheryl Okuma, county environmental management director, as reported in The Maui News. "County residential recycling bins can accept most every kind of can now."

Soups, meats, fruits and vegetables, tomato sauce and coffee are some of the products that come canned in steel, tin, aluminum or bi-metal containers. The cans should be rinsed and have the lids removed before recycling, but labels can stay on.

Cans can be recycled in marked bins at any county drop-off location. They are not redeemable under the HI-5 beverage container recycling program.
