Big Island man dies in car wreck

A Pahoa man died Saturday evening after his car rammed into another vehicle at the intersection of Hawai'i Belt Road and Kukui Camp Road in Mountain View, Big Island police said.

The accident occurred at 5:03 p.m. when the Pahoa man rear-ended the 1987 pickup truck of a 26-year-old Mountain View man who had stopped to make a left turn onto Kukui Camp Road, police said.

The driver of the pickup was not injured. The 52-year-old Pahoa man died at the Hilo Medical Center at 6:04 p.m.

Police did not say if speed or alcohol were factors. The Pahoa man was not wearing a seatbelt. Police have initiated a negligent homicide investigation.

TRACTOR-TRAILER ACCIDENT KILLS MAN

A man died yesterday while making repairs to his roll-off tractor-trailer on Mo'oiki Street at Waikupanaha Street in Waimanalo, officials said.

The man was pinned at 1 p.m. when the truck came down on top of him, said fire Capt. James Todd. City Emergency Medical Services workers responded to the accident.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life device to extract the man, Todd said. No other details were available.


SURFER FOUND IN CRITICAL CONDITION

A Waikiki surfer was taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital in critical condition yesterday morning, the Honolulu Police Department said.

The man, whom police said was in his late 20s, was pulled from the water near the Outrigger Reef on the Beach hotel.
