KAPOLEI
Planning Commission to meet on rock quarry

Advertiser Staff

Grace Pacific Corp.'s plans to expand its Makakilo rock quarry will be the subject of the city Planning Commission's meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

While the Makakilo/Kapolei/Honokai Hale Neighborhood Board recommended approval of the expansion last year, the plan has met with resistance from some area residents in recent months.

Grace Pacific wants to extend the life of the quarry, which is mauka of H-1 Freeway, for 25 years, through 2032. The plan expands the quarry upward toward the 700-foot elevation of Pu'u Makakilo.

Specifically, Grace Pacific wants to expand uphill from the active quarry's existing 72 acres to about 106 acres. It also proposes to increase the buffer zone from 178 acres to 393 acres, including 11 acres of landscaped buffer on one side of the quarry and a screening berm on the other.

Grace Pacific officials said the demand for construction-grade basaltic rock remains high.

The state Land Use Commission will make the ultimate decision on the expansion. The Planning Commission will submit a recommendation to the LUC.
