No. 3 Stanford beats No. 4 Hawaii in water polo, 10-6

Kara Hillman scored three goals and third-ranked Stanford shut out fourth-ranked Hawai'i in the second half to capture third place of its invitational with a 10-6 victory yesterday at Stanford, Calif.

The Cardinal (4-1) pulled away from a 6-6 halftime with three goals in the third period.

Ryan Hanson-Swaner scored two goals for the Rainbow Wahine (5-2), who were playing their seventh match in five days.

Earlier in the day, Kelly Mason scored three goals and Carmen Eggens two as the Rainbow Wahine edged No. 13 Michigan, 8-7, in a round-robin match.

Julie Hyrne and Alison Mantel each scored two goals for the Wolverines (2-5).

The Rainbow Wahine return to Honolulu before heading back to the Mainland for their next match, Feb. 20 at Arizona State.

AMANAKIS WINS THREE

University of Hawai'i's Thalia Amanakis won three events, including a record-setting performance in the 60-meter hurdles, to highlight Saturday's Sunset Meet at Cooke Field.

Amanakis, a junior from Sydney, Australia, won the hurdles in 8.83 seconds, beating her previous UH record of 9.03.

She also won the 400 in 56.82 and the 800 in 2:12.82. Both times rank as seventh-best in school history.

Junior Samantha Weaver won the pole vault with 12 feet, 1 3/4 inches — the third-best effort in UH history.
