Man, 19, critically injured in Waikiki moped crash

Advertiser Staff

A 19-year-old man was critically injured early today in a moped crash on Seaside Avenue, 71 feet north of Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki.

According to police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Alan Vegas, the operator was injured when he lost control of his 1988 Yamaha moped after turning left from Kalakaua onto Seaside at 1:05 a.m. The moped veered to the right, where it struck a curb and then a tree.

The man, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the moped. He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, Vegas said.

Speed and/or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors, Vegas said.
