No immediate surf problems on Oahu's north, west shores

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu police and the city's Department of Emergency Management reported no problems today at 6:30 p.m. but a high-surf warning issued through tomorrow night by the National Weather Service is in effect for north- and west-facing shores of O'ahu.

The warning also extends to north- and west-facing shores of Ni'ihau and Kaua'i, and north-facing shores of Moloka'i and Maui.

Surf along north-facing shores could reach 20-30 feet tonight and tomorrow while waves on west-facing shores may be in the 12-20 feet range.

Lead forecaster Vladimir Ryshko said the National Weather Service is receiving no data from Bouy No. 1 due to unknown problems and issued the warning based on computer preditions gathered from other computer predictions. The accuracy of the computer predictions is unknown, Ryshko said,

"We won't have data until the surf arrives," Ryshko said.

John M. Cummings III, city Emergency Management spokesman, said "low" high tides could lessen the potential for high-surf damage. O'ahu Civil Defense personnel will monitor the overnight situation.

The high-surf warning will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Friday.
