Chinese New Year celebration planned for Waipahu

Advertiser Staff

The Waipahu Festival Marketplace celebrates the Chinese New Year on Saturday with a series of activities.

The Year of the Rat will be welcomed by the lighting of firecrackers and a visit by the Narcisssus Festival queen and her court.

There will also be narcissus bulb carving, martial arts demonstrations, acupuncture and feng shui displays, wok stir fry offerings and Chinese dance and karaoke. The public is also invited to take part in a tong sam or cheong sam contest where men and women dress in traditional Chinese clothing.

The activities will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the marketplace, which is located at the old Bigway store on 94-340 Waipahu Depot St.

Until the 1930s, Waipahu had Hawai'i's largest concentration of Chinese outside of Honolulu.
