Baseball: Phils, Benson agree on minor league deal

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — Kris Benson agreed to terms today on a minor-league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies after missing last season following shoulder surgery.

The right-hander will head to spring training with a chance to compete with Adam Eaton, J.D. Durbin and Chad Durbin for a spot at the end of the Phillies rotation.

The 33-year-old Benson had rotator cuff surgery on his throwing shoulder in March 2007. The year before, he went 11-12 with a 4.82 ERA in 30 starts with the Orioles.

The contract is contingent on Benson passing a physical.

The former first overall pick has a 68-73 career record with a 4.34 ERA in 195 starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets and the Orioles.
