Park shootings heighten tension at Radford High

Radford High School administrators have managed to keep the lid on a potentially volatile situation stemming from an off-campus incident Tuesday at Aliamanu park in which two students were shot in the face with a pellet gun.

State Department of Education spokeswoman Sandra Goya said school officials reported no on-campus disruptions yesterday and today, and have brought in extra security personnel.

Tension, however, remains high among some students and their families, and police are monitoring the situation off-campus. Reports of "imminent" off-campus fights the past two school days have not materialized, police said.

The triggering incident involved three students — two boys, ages 16 and 14, and a girl, 14 — on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. at the park.

The boys were fighting and the girl eventually managed to separate the pair, police said. The older boy then allegedly took out a pellet pistol and fired three to five shots at the other boy and one shot at the girl.

Both were shot in the face, according to police.

The 14-year-old boy suffered cuts below one of his eyes and ears as well as a shoulder injury from being kicked and punched. The girl was treated for a cut on her cheek.

Both victims were taken to hospitals by parents.

The after-school tension yesterday was relieved when the shooting suspect surrendered to police accompanied by his parents, police said. The boy was booked as a juvenile on two counts on second-degree assault and released to the custody of his parents pending further investigation.

Police said they have not responded to any reports of fighting the past two days on the Radford campus.
