The 'Aiea boys basketball team isn't shy about shooting 3-pointers.

It lives and dies by it, and last night against Farrington it took only a brief hot streak to spur a 54-49 victory in the final of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Boys Basketball White Conference tournament at McKinley.

'Aiea, the West champion, hit three 3-pointers during a 1:45 span in the third quarter, which sparked a 24-5 run.

"Three-pointers, we know we can shoot it," senior Joshua Chung said. "If you leave us open we're going to shoot it."

Chung scored 14 of his 20 points in the third period for 'Aiea, which repeated as OIA White champion.

"It means a lot to the team and to everybody from 'Aiea who came down to support us," said 'Aiea coach Wyatt Tau.

Chung's first 3-pointer came from the right wing with 6:45 left in the third, and he banked in another from the same spot with 5:35 remaining to cut Farrington's lead to 29-27.

"I was feeling kind of hot," Chung said.

Keenan Naeole gave Na Ali'i their first lead at 30-29 with a 3-pointer from the left wing as he was fouled. He completed the four-point play.

'Aiea (16-0) eventually took a 45-32 advantage with 4:22 left in the game.

"We knew we had to play for an undefeated season and everything counts from here on out," said 'Aiea senior Obie Woods, who had 11 points.

'Aiea and Farrington, the East champion, will represent the OIA in next week's Division II state tournament.

"We're looking forward to the state," Tau said. "We're not just happy winning back-to-back (OIA titles)."

In the third period, 'Aiea was 7 of 11 from the field, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range. It was just 2 of 15 the rest of the game from behind the arc.

Farrington (13-3) got as close as 52-49 with 18 seconds remaining after a layup by Christian Hernandez, but Woods nailed two free throws with 9.5 seconds left to seal the victory.

Na Ali'i attempted one 3-pointer in the fourth, but was 11 of 13 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Farrington was 4 of 12 from the line in the second half.

The Governors played a 1-2-2 zone the entire game.

" 'Aiea is very quick. We're quick also," said Farrington coach Allan Silva. "But it wasn't an ordinary zone. We picked up on the outside. We contained them in the first half; we had a six-point lead. In the third quarter, we didn't pick them up right and we gave up the ball too many times."

Farrington made its first five shots and led 14-4 with 3:13 left in the first quarter. The Governors led 23-17 at halftime.
