No. 16 Hawaii softball sweeps

The No. 16 University of Hawai'i softball team got complete-game efforts from All-American Kate Robinson and junior pitcher Courtney Baughman in a doubleheader sweep yesterday in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic.

The wins pushed head coach Bob Coolen's win total at UH to 600-367-1.

Robinson beat Long Beach State, 5-3, while Baughman defeated Central Florida, 3-1, at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Both pitchers spaced six hits for UH (3-0).


BASKETBALL

BOLLA REPRIMANDED BY WAC FOR RIPPING REFS

University of Hawai'i women's basketball coach Jim Bolla was reprimanded by Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson yesterday for critical comments he made about game officials last week.

The WAC said Bolla violated the league's sportsmanship code. Bolla made the comments about the disparity of foul shots after the Rainbow Wahine's 74-69 loss to Nevada on Feb. 9 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Said Benson: "Coach Bolla's comments clearly violated the WAC code and will not be tolerated. Any further violation may result in him being suspended for a minimum of one game."

In a press release from the WAC yesterday, Bolla apologized for his actions.

HPU WOMEN BEAT NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR

Ashley Jenkins scored a game-high 37 points as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Notre Dame de Namur, 82-60, yesterday in a women's Pacific West Conference game at Kaiser.

Tanaia Keyes led the Argos (10-12, 10-4). Jocelyne Norris added 12 points for the Sea Warriors (7-16, 7-7).

Other PacWest games:

  • Dan Bergeron scored 20 points to to lead Notre Dame de Namur over HPU, 71-59, in a men's game at Kaiser. Jason Curtis led HPU (6-17, 3-11) with 20 points. Chris Clock added 19 points for the Argos (9-13, 5-9).

  • Nathan Sims scored 28 points to lift Brigham Young-Hawai'i over Grand Canyon, 104-78, in a men's game at La'ie. David Gonzales scored 22 points for the Antelopes (11-13, 6-10). Lucas Alves had 18 points for BYUH (14-6, 9-4).

  • Rosalyn Nelson scored a game-high 29 points as Grand Canyon beat BYUH, 87-54, in a women's game at La'ie. Sara Dalgliesh added 10 points for the Antelopes (17-10, 13-3). BYUH (4-18, 4-9) was led by Richelle Fenenbock's 20 points.

  • Jessica Jones scored 16 points as Dixie State College routed Hawai'i-Hilo, 86-62, in a women's game at St. George, Utah. Shayla Martinez added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Rebels (11-10, 7-5). UH-Hilo (7-13, 7-6) was led by Nesha Kimitete's 13 points.

  • Ryan Sanchez had 23 points and 14 rebounds as Dixie State held off Hawai'i-Hilo, 81-78, in a men's game at St. George, Utah. Vince Alvarado led UH-Hilo (11-10, 6-7) with 17 points against the Antelopes (10-11, 7-5).

    KAMEHAMEHA GOALIE SIGNS WITH HAWAI'I

    Kamehameha Schools goalkeeper Kanani Taaca, the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 state high school soccer championships, signed with the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team.

    Taaca joins two California players to form the 2008 recruiting class.

    The other players signed are defender Colleen Burns of Coronado and defender/midfielder Brittani Lum of Folsom.
