Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i-Hilo made a four-run fourth inning stand up to hold of UH-Manoa, 4-3, today to avoid a series sweep at Les Murakami Stadium.

Freshman starter Kekoa Lee (1-0) two runs, five hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings for the Vulcans (1-2) before 1,667.

Dustin Gilmore pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his first save. Alex Capaul (0-1) went six innings, allowing four runs, six hits and a walk with two strikeouts for the Rainbows (2-1).

Lee's wildness hurt him in the bottom of the third. Kevin Fujii led off with a walk, took second on Nate Young's sacrifice, advanced to third on a wild pitch and after Jon Hee walked, scored on Shane Hoey's ground single to left to give the Rainbows a 1-0 lead. With runners at first and second, Brandon Haislet grounded to third for an inning-ending double play.

The Vulcans took the lead in the fourth. T.J. Brown led off with a single and took third on Michael Higa's hit-and-run single to right. A wild pitch scored Brown and sent Higa to third. After A.J. Satele struck out, Peter Rodgers was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Dayne Ogawa's ground-rule double to left made it 2-1 and sent Rodgers to third. After Keoni Manago bounced out to the pitcher, holding the runners, Shane Kessell's two-run single to right made it 4-1.

The Rainbows got one back in the fifth when Sean Montplaisir led off with a triple to right and scored when Kevin Fujii grounded out to second. Despite a walk by Nate Young and single by Hee, Hoey lined into an inning-ending double play at second.

The Rainbows pulled to within 4-3 in the seventh. Pinch hitter Derek DuPree led off with a walk against Jesse Moon and took second on Young's sacrifice. Hee and Hoey were hit by pitches to load the bases. Moon was replaced by Jeffrey Germain, who allowed a sacifice fly to left by Haislet. Kevin Macdonald was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Jeffrey Van Doornum lined out to short to end the inning.
