Big Island police yesterday charged a 38-year-old Puna man in connection with Thursday night's shooting in the Orchidland subdivision.

Steven Kaio is being held at the Hilo cellblock in lieu of $100,000. Kaio was charged with first-degree assault, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and three other prohibited firearm offenses. He has a court appearance scheduled Tuesday.

Kaio is accused of shooting a man, 51, once in the head at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the victim's 35th Avenue residence. The victim is in guarded condition at Hilo Medical Center, police said.
