Hilo men squeak by Dixie State, 89-88

Jay De Maestri sank two free throws with three seconds to play as Hawai'i-Hilo edged host Dixie State, 89-88, last night in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at St. George, Utah.

De Maestri finished with 21 points and Vince Alvarado added 23 for the Vulcans (12-10 overall, 7-7 PacWest), who trailed 88-85 with 1:42 to play. Jacob Briggs hit two free throws with 1:24 left, closing Hilo to 88-87.

Neither team scored on its next possession and Kasey Winters, who led the Rebels (10-12, 7-6) with 24 points, missed two free throws (he was 13 of 14 at that point) with 29 seconds remaining. De Maestri later put Hilo ahead to stay.

Briggs and John Smith each added 12 points, and Sam Wilhoite had 11 for Hilo.

BYU-HAWAI'I 74, Grand Canyon 70: Lucas Alves scored 25 points as the host Seasiders (15-6, 10-4) held off the Antelopes (11-14, 6-11) at Cannon Activities Center in Lai'e.

Paul Peterson added 13 points for BYUH, including two free throws with 25 seconds left to make it 73-70.

David Gonzales and Rudy Bogan each had 16 points for Grand Canyon.

Hawai'i Pacific 71, Notre Dame de Namur 61: Rishi Kakad scored 28 points as the Sea Warriors (7-17, 4-11) beat the Argonauts (9-14, 5-10) at Kaiser High School.

Ryan Cooper led Notre Dame de Namur with 18 points.

PACWEST WOMEN

Dixie State 72, Hawai'i-Hilo 70: Deney Phommabout hit two free throws with seven seconds to play as the host Rebels (12-10, 8-5) edged the Vulcans (7-14, 7-7) at St. George, Utah.

Sheila Azevedo had 18 points and 12 rebound for Hilo, which trailed 44-31 at halftime before mounting a strong comeback.

Ashley Kualii's layup with 1:28 left gave Hilo its first lead of the game at 70-68. Lindsey Chettinger hit two free throws to tie the score at 70.

Hilo missed two attempts on its next possession before turning over the ball and fouling Phommabout, who put Dixie ahead to stay.

Grand Canyon 84, BYUH 45: Rosslyn Nelson scored 20 points as the Antelopes (18-10, 14-3) raced past the host Seasiders (4-19, 4-10) at Cannon Activities Center in Lai'e.

Samantha Murphy and Sara Dalgliesh each added 15 points for Grand Canyon.

Richelle Fenenbock led BYUH with nine points.

Notre Dame de Namur 70, Hawai'i Pacific 55: Jennifer Dreessen scored 13 points as the Argonauts (11-12, 11-4) beat the Sea Warriors (7-17, 7-8) at Kaiser High School.

Ashley Jenkins and Karras Blate each had 10 points, Angela Spence added nine points and 11 rebounds, and Emily Kreutter had nine points and 10 rebounds for HPU.
