Waianae man accused of making false bomb report

Advertiser Staff

A 35-year-old Wai'anae man was charged Friday in a federal complaint with allegedly making a false report about a passenger boarding a Los Angeles-bound flight with explosives in his luggage.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents identified Jose Sergio Medrano Gutierrez as the man who placed the 911 call on Dec. 14, 2007, that forced ATA Flight 4754 to be delayed and the plane evacuated at Honolulu Airport.

Gutierrez allegedly admitted to making false statements to agents last Monday and was charged four days later.

Alfonso Garcia, the man Gutierrez claimed was carrying the explosives, was among several witnesses who identified Gutierrez's voice on the 911 tape to FBI agents.
