Waialua Library to host Hawaii authors' night, book sale

Advertiser Staff

The Friends of Waialua Public Library will this month host its 11th annual Authors' Night and Book Sale, featuring local authors making presentations about recently published books.

A pupu reception will precede the authors' presentations and book sales, set for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 28. Admission is free.

Among the featured authors will be Caren Loebel-Fried, flying in from New Jersey to participate. Her illustrated book published by Bishop Museum Press, "Lono and the Magic Land Beneath the Sea," won first place in the Kapalapala Po'okela Awards for Excellence in Children's Literature and Excellence in Children's Hawaiian Culture in 2007. Loebel-Fried will describe how she researched and refined her method of illustration. She will also present "Pua Pol'," The Pretty Blue Hawaiian Flower, written by Nona Beamer and illustrated by Loebel-Fried.

Other authors include:

  • Donovan Dela Cruz, who will talk about his new "Puka Guide: 100 Hawaiian-style Hole-in-the-Wall Restaurants. Dela Cruz is also the City Councilman for the district from Mililani Mauka to He'eia.

  • Author and Kapi'olani Community College instructor Mavis Hara will present her acclaimed first book, "An Offering of Rice." While the book is fiction, it reads like a personal history.

  • Jim Little, a North Shore plumeria grower, will be on hand to talk about his award-winning book "Growing Plumerias in Hawaii." Little turned a hobby into a thriving business and his book appeals to all backyard gardeners who prize his bible of plumerias.

Following the authors' presentations, there will be a book sale. Door prizes will also be awarded. Money raised from the book sales will be donated by the Friends of the Library for future purchases.
