Some Real Simple magazine Aha! uses for everyday foods: Try spaghetti as a candle lighter when you're short on matches. (Be patient; it can take a few seconds to ignite.) And use Life Savers as candle holders to protect your birthday cakes from wax drippings. (Be sure to use the Life Savers that come in rolls, as the individually wrapped ones are too big.)

SAVE THE PLANET

GREEN UP YOUR DAILY ABLUTIONS

  • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth to save up to 10 gallons a day. For a family of four, that's 14,600 gallons of water a year.

  • Rediscover good ol' bar soap; eliminate plastic bottle waste that comes with liquid soaps.

  • Fix leaky toilets, which waste up to 200 gallons of water a day. Check for leaks by adding food coloring to the tank; color will appear in the bowl within 15 minutes.

    FINAL WORD

"The U.S. has missed opportunities to show leadership because it lacks a coherent approach to either problem."

James Mulva | chairman of oil giant ConocoPhillips, discussing the challenge of keeping the planet fueled while not ruining the environment, at a gathering of industry executives, academics and analysts in Texas
